Flickerama

When someone asks me what inspired Flicker, I generally answer that I drew inspiration from the many stories of humans who are spirited away by faeries and return to the human realm years--sometimes even centuries--later, as well as from similar stories, like "Rip van Winkle" and the Japanese folktale about Urashima Taro. I've been fascinated by the idea of a person who finds themselves removed from their own time and stuck in another for about as long as I can remember.

It was only recently--last night, in fact--that I realized where that initial fascination probably came from...

My sisters are rewatching the series, and the more I think about it, the more intrigued (and distantly horrified) I am by the fact that Futurama--a show I watched religiously as a child, when it first aired--probably informed and influenced my later work more than I ever realized before.

At first glance, Flicker and Futurama don't seem to be anything alike... but think of it this way:

After awakening from a state of suspended animation, a redheaded protagonist must learn to get along with a group of strange new friends and cope with living in a world that is no longer familiar.

I mean, that's where the similarities end. But it's sort of surreal to think about. Futurama... what else might you have subconsciously caused me to create?

Sundry Updates:

For those of you who may or may not be wondering, this is what I've been up to lately:

• Went to see The Hunger Games. It was everything I dreamed it would be--and, in some cases, it was even better. (Should I write an in-depth review? Let me know.)
• Watched the online premiere of Legend of Korra. My happiness was so great that I burst into tears during the opening sequence. (In case you didn't know, Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my favorite things in the entire world, and it's been a big influence on my work and my life.)
• Started reading Game of Thrones. I blame Tumblr for this. I've seen so many gorgeous GIF sets from the HBO series that I'm now chomping at the bit to find how what all the hullabaloo is about--but since I don't care to actually watch the HBO series, I'm reading the book instead. And so begins my journey into yet another fandom!
• Watched the first half of season 1 of Supernatural. Again, I blame Tumblr. All the Supernatural stuff on my dash ensured that I was a fan even more I started watching the show. Oy vey. More fandoms
• Heard back from a few book bloggers who are willing to review Flicker! I'm so excited. I hope they enjoy Flicker, and I'll make sure to post links to the reviews once they go up in the coming weeks/months.
• Made plans for a book reading at the local library, and a signing at a local bookstore. More info on that to come soon.

So, all told, I've been a very busy fangirl. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with all these new fandoms! Do you guys ever have trouble juggling them all? Do you have to try to "budget" yourself when you get overloaded on fandoms?

I can't write without music. No, really! Music really helps me sink into the world I'm writing about, and get into the right mood to depict scenes and characters. Let It Be Known

... that I successfully kept myself from watching the season finale of The Bachelor. I have reclaimed my self-respect!

I've promised myself that I won't get invested in Dancing with the Stars this season, but we'll see how that turns out. (Imagine me making a skeptical face.)

Better still, The Hunger Games hits theatres on Friday, so I know where I'll be! And better still, The Legend of Korra is going to air in less than one month! Honestly, I've been a wreck since AtLA ended, so this couldn't come at a better time. I am so ready to love Korra.

It's like everything good is happening all at once!

Speaking of good things... Flicker is now available digitally on the Kindle through Amazon, and on virtually every other format known to man on Smashwords.com. I'll be updating the links on the Flicker page of this blog, so check it out!

Blogging Is Hard

I have the hardest time trying to come up with ideas for posts on this blog. The worst part is that the things I feel the strongest urge to blog about are the various TV shows that I arrange my whole week around. You guys should probably brace yourself for a few weeks of TV ranting: For one thing, The Bachelor finale is coming up (yes, I watch The Bachelor, and yes, I am properly ashamed). For another, Grey's Anatomy has my heart in a death-grip, and at some point, I'll need to wordvomit all my fan-feelings.

(I literally had a nightmare two nights ago in which I missed the new episode, and when I woke, I was extremely distressed. It was awful.)

And finally, The Good Wife looks like it's going to be especially juicy this week. I'm practically shaking with excitement.

On a more interesting note, I'm still working on getting FLICKER up on Amazon--expect that within the next week. I'm determined to make it work!

I'm also toying with the idea of making a big photo-essay sort of post detailing how the Pokemon games follow Joseph Campbell's Hero Cycle. I'm positive that it does. I just need to map it out. Be on the lookout for that coming soon!

A FLICKER of interest?

Well, FLICKER hit the shelves of the local bookstore yesterday... and promptly sold out! I'm absolutely astonished. The employee who handled my books told me she'd never seen a book sell out so fast--not even a book by a best-selling author.

I'm so grateful for the support of my family and friends in this endeavor. Their enthusiasm really makes my heart sing. (In fact, many of my amazing friends are still clamoring for books, so I'll have to order more paperbacks on the double!) I can only hope that word of mouth gets around, and I can get the support of the community as well, as I continue to sell paperbacks locally, and begin selling online within the week.

FLICKER

I know, I know, I've been a terrible blogger lately. But today, I have big news!

FLICKER, my first novel, is officially in stock at my local bookstore... and is about to become available online as well! You can find the book on Lulu here. FLICKER will also be available on Amazon and as an ebook within the next few days. Check out the FLICKER page on this blog for more information about the book.

I cannot fully express just how thrilled I am to have FLICKER finally available to the public. I can't wait to share this story and these characters with you!
