Dance Party

Can it be? An actual mid-week post on my blog?

Your eyes do not deceive you, friends! I'm feeling a little ambitious today, so I wanted to do something fun. For today's post, I'm going to share my "Dance Party" playlist. (Technically, it's labeled "DANE PARTAAAAAAY" on my iPod, but that's irrelevant.) As you might imagine, it's made up of dance music, trance music, and misc. other music that I like to dance to.

I put this mix on whenever I need to be productive. For some reason, it really helps me write, and do other stuff, like work on newspaper layout. I wanted to share the magic with you. Here goes!

  3. Every Car You Chase (Mashup) - Snow Patrol and The Police
  4. Mr. Brightside (Thin White Duke Remix) - The Killers

Flashback Friday: 003

Or: "The Jordan Post"

Okay, this is going to be a little different from my previous Flashback Fridays. Instead of fangirling and basking in nostalgia, today we're going to talk about my friend Jordan.

This is how we party at Wal-Mart. (For the record, I'm the one in the Spider Man mask. Jordan is Captain America.)

Also, we are The Batman.
I met Jordan when I was a freshman in high school. We were in the same Honors English class, and at one point, his assigned seat was directly behind mine. One day, I was innocently wearing my Bleach hoodie. I was quite proud of it: It had a Hollow symbol on the front, and a big image of Ichigo wielding his Zanpakutō on the back. During a quiet moment in class, I heard a voice behind me. An approximation of the conversation follows here:

Jordan: So... you like Bleach?
Me: Yeah. Do you?
Jordan:  Yeah. Do you like other anime, too?
Me: Yeah. I like Naruto and stuff. Do you?
Jordan: Yeah. How far are you in the manga?
Me: I'm current with Japan.
Jordan: Me too!
Me: *wheeze*

And so began a beautiful friendship.

(Also, if you're a nerd and you're looking for other nerds, I wholeheartedly encourage you to wear nerdy T-shirts and hoodies. That's how you draw them out! It worked with Jordan, and I recall another girl I went to high school with who, after we became friends through other means, admitted that she had noticed my Bleach hoodie and wanted to talk to me about it, but ended up being too shy. But don't be shy, guys! Nerdy clothes are a way for us to find each other in public!)

But back to the topic at hand. After that day, Jordan and I embarked on a wonderful nerdy adventure that, as of now, has lasted about five years.

Jordan is pretty much my main homeslice. We've done some crazy things in our time together--and when I say "crazy," I really mean, "sort of whimsical," and sometimes, "kind of sassy."

One time, we showed up to our high school robotics team's end-of-the-year party wearing identical, bright orange Wise Family Reunion T-shirts, just to see if anyone would notice. We also brought our own beverages and bottles of bubble stuff. We sat around in the yard, blowing bubbles--again, to see if anyone would notice. Nobody was terribly impressed, but we thought we were pretty rad.

I can't even tell you how many times we've gone to the movies and snickered through the whole thing, trying to keep our witty commentary quiet enough that we don't both other viewers with our humor. Or how many times we've argued about shipping in Naruto. Or argued about how he's perpetually running 10 minutes late, while I'm perpetually running half an hour early. (Believe me, that kind of difference is not easy to reconcile!) Or waxed poetic about Pokemon--and believe me, we've done a lot of that. (I'm still trying to get him to divulge his secret for breeding invincible super Pokemon.) Or gushed about The Dresden Files. Or just basically been best bros for the last five years.

Next week, Jordan is leaving for his Mormon mission. He'll be in Chile for two whole years. Two. Years.

I'm exceedingly happy for him, because I know how much his mission means to him. But I'm also incredibly bummed because I won't get to hear his voice or see his face or communicate with him in real-time for two full years. We'll be exchanging letters, of course (and I've promised to keep him updated on the new Naruto chapter every week, complete with my own hilariously-bad illustrations), but it'll be difficult.

I'm going to miss him like crazycakes, and before he goes, I just wanted to make sure that you all know what a wonderful friend my Jordan is. So, once again: This is my buddy Jordan. I'm so fortunate and proud to be his friend. He's one of the sweetest guys in the world. If you know him, you're lucky! If you don't know him, you're missing out!

This Broship is eternal!

Apologies!

If anyone was looking forward to Flashback Friday yesterday, I apologize for missing it. I've been knee-deep in a bunch of stuff, and I just didn't budget time for it, unfortunately. I may miss another Flashback Friday this week, but I promise that I have two very special Flashbacks in the works--it'll just take some time to put them together and make them awesome, hence the potential break next Friday. :)

But in the meantime, let me give you some General Life Updates.

For one thing, I'm working through my feelings regarding the passing of Ray Bradbury. It's rough. That man did more for me than any other single writer (with the possible exception of Holly Black). I'm not sure what to do with myself without him.

Another thing: I've started reading the Sailor Moon manga. I'm four volumes in. It's... interesting. Honestly, I'm kind of confused. Shojo manga tends to have a lot more happening on each page than shonen (what I normally read), and it almost seems cluttered to me. I'm having a hard time keeping everything straight! Maybe I just find the anime more engaging...

In case anyone was curious, my previous experience with shojo manga includes:

  • I read the first two volumes of Rosario + Vampire, and did not like it at all. Too much fanservice, and I wasn't all that comfortable with the way all the female characters were presented.
  • I read the first two volumes of Loveless (sensing a trend here?) and, while I was absolutely in love with the art, and I like nothing more than finding a good BL manga, I just couldn't get into it.
  • Back in the days before OneManga.com was shut down, I read the first three chapters of Absolute Boyfriend, then skipped to the last chapter to see how it ended--and sobbed my eyes out. THE EMOTIONS.
Aaaaand, that's all!

I've always been more of a shonen girl, personally. I prefer storylines with more emphasis on friendship than romance, and more fighting than flower petals. I think I might just be more accustomed to shonen: When I just a Little Kaye, there were always a few issues of Shonen Jump floating around the house, and I watched a whole lot of DBZ as a child, so I think I just naturally gravitate toward works in that vein. (My favorites include Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist and Mushishi, among others.)

However, I'm always looking for something new to read! If you guys know of any really good shojo manga, please leave a comment and I'll check it out! :D

Flashback Friday: 002

First, let me apologize. I've been pretty busy this week, and I completely spaced about Flashback Friday... But never fear! I've put together a quick post. Today, we're flashing back to...

SAILOR MOON

(Admit it. You know every word to that theme song!)

You guys remember Sailor Moon, right? Maybe the guys don't--but every girl reading this blog should remember fantasizing about running around in those gorgeous outfits, fighting evil, winning love, and all that good stuff. When I was just a Little Kaye, I remember watching Sailor Moon religiously. I also have a vivid memory of walking into the video store with my mom and nearly having an aneurysm when I spotted a VHS copy of one of the Sailor Moon movies. Seriously, I freaked out. My happiness was complete.

I remember being crazy about Sailor Jupiter, because even a kid, I loved tough, independent girls. Sailor Mars had a special place in my heart because I was jealous of her long, flowing hair. Sailor Venus was just so beautiful. I kind of wanted to be here. Sailor Moon was buckets of fun, and I more or less in love with her boyfriend. That Tuxedo Mask... *fans self*

But Sailor Mercury (Amy) was always my favorite. Especially as a Little Kaye, I was drawn to short-haired girls. I've always had short hair, but I barely ever saw girls with hair anything like mine in movies--likely because long hair is such a traditional symbol of femininity. (Think about: Mulan is really the only Disney girl with short hair--and her hair is still long enough to pull up into a bun!)

(Also, this is probably part of why I connected so strongly with Ghibli girls like San, Kiki and Nausicaa. I could immediately identify. From the fist moment i saw those characters, I instinctively knew that they were more like me than other characters I'd been presented with in movies and TV.)

Back to Sailor Mercury. I loved her hair--not just the length, but also the color. I've long been fascinated with hair dye. My fondest wish has been to dye my hair blue, but due to a series of strange occurrences (which I'll talk about in another post someday), I've had to settle for purple and red. I think I also connected with that character because she was very smart and bookish, much like me as a child.

Aside from just being really fun, Sailor Moon was something little girls could watch on Saturday mornings that provided them with a group of really excellent female role models. The Sailor Scouts were so varied in their personalities--some were smart and bookish, some were more social creatures, some outgoing, some were shy, some were "girly girls," some were more "tomboyish," and so on. The message I took away from Sailor Moon is one that I think needs to come back in pop culture today: There's no wrong way to be a girl!

As I sign off, allow me to leave you with another Sailor Moon tune:
